The Washington Lottery started in 1982 and offers a number of draw and scratch-off games. Originally, lottery proceeds went into the general fund, supporting any number of programs in the state.
Voters decided where to use lottery proceeds in 2002, thanks to Measure 728. Revenue from lottery proceeds was moved from the General Fund to the Student Achievement Fund and the Education Construction Fund. Since July 1, 2004, funds only support the Education Construction Fund, which funds the maintenance and repair needs of higher institutions and builds, remodels, and renovates K-12 schools.
